What are the qualities of a good inoculant strain?
To be of inoculant-quality
a strain(s) must have the following characteristics:
- Able to nodulate and
fix nitrogen with
all commonly used varieties of the legume(s)
for which it is recommended
- Able to compete with less effective indigenous soil rhizobia,
and so form most of the nodules produced
- Persistent in the soil over time
- Tolerant of soil stresses, such as high temperature, acidity
and drought
- Grow well in simple and inexpensive laboratory media
- Be genetically stable
