Why study nodulation and nitrogen fixation?
![]() |
Crown nodulation of soybean following inoculation with Bradyrhizobium

-
N2
fixation is the second most important biological process
on earth
- ~ 175 MT N2 is fixed globally each year, accounting for almost 50% of all the N used in agriculture
- Crop legumes can fix 100-200
kg N ha-1 yr-2, but rates are often lower,
and in bean and soybean in the U.S. appear to be declining
- In natural environments such as prairies, N2 fixation
can be the principal source of N
- Commonly a more economic, sustainable and environmentally friendly
form of N supply
